The importance of competition

I would encourage all that are serious about learning jujitsu or any other martial art/combat system to participate in competitions every now and then. Learning Jujitsu and never practicing it against and active opponent, would be like going football training and never playing a match! How will you know what works and what doesn't? learning Jujitsu syllabus with a passive Uke is a very good teaching tool, and enables you to get to grips with the technique before trying to apply it, but if you only apply the techique to a passive Uke, do not expect it to work the same way against an active opponent. All the greats in Martial arts like Kimura, Kano, Bruce Lee, went down town Friday night to see if their techique worked?
That doesn't work in the modern world, and might get you in trouble with the Police, but competition is a modern day safe version of that experiance, and as important learning tool as any Syllabus.

If you can make it work against someone trying to defeat you, you know it works, and without serious injury due to the rules and referee, it's a no brainer.
